Michael Ackerman

Executive Director

Michael is an educator, adventurer, and mountain professional from Colorado’s Western Slope. With over two and a half decades of experience, he trains elite teams and leaders to excel in demanding environments while maximizing efficiency and performance. From the boardroom to the backcountry, he has led and educated diverse groups, inspiring colleagues and students alike. Michael is deeply committed to the natural world and passionate about wild, snowy places.

Ack built his expertise at Prescott College, Fort Lewis College, and Harvard University. After earning a BA in Adventure Education in 1999, Michael excelled as a snow professional, including as a mountain guide, ski patroller, backcountry educator, avalanche forecaster, canine handler, and SAR technician. With his energetic dog Lucille, he serves on multiple winter response teams. Ack offers fresh insight to the field by publishing and presenting on rescue research and avalanche topics.

At the avalanche school, Ackerman progressed through roles as faculty, course leader, Director of Recreational Programs, and Deputy Director of Operations, before becoming Executive Director, now overseeing all SAS operations and training. He collaborates with the Board of Trustees to shape the school’s vision and direction.
