4SAW 2022 PRESS RELEASE

The 4th Annual Four Corners Snow and Avalanche Workshop (4SAW) will be held in Silverton, Colorado on Saturday, October 8th, 2022 from 8:00am to 5:00pm.

4SAW is an annual gathering for avalanche practitioners, mountain professionals and backcountry recreationists held in the Southern Rocky Mountains & Southwest United States every October. 4SAW serves as an un-official start to the 22-23’ season and includes a full line-up of speakers, workshops, clinics, exhibitors & activities focused on snow, avalanches, backcountry rescue & winter recreation.

The all day event, sponsored by the American Avalanche Association (A3) is the first, A3 sanctioned SAW scheduled for the fall of 2022. 4SAW 2022 will be preceded by two days of pre-conference workshops & skills clinics on October 6th & 7th. Contributions from 4SAW sponsors and supporters, grants, and the Town of Silverton assist in deferring much of the event’s overhead, keeping ticket costs as low as possible for attendees.

4SAW’s 2022 theme will focus on “Our Relationship with Risk” and includes a bevy of thematically driven talks, updates from avalanche centers from throughout the four corners, a seasonal prediction from the National Weather Service and presentations on emerging science and research in the snow and avalanche world.

4SAW is expected to draw over 300 attendees, sponsors, manufacturers, vendors, outfitters & non-profit exhibitors. Following an online 4SAW in 2020 and an atypical, post-covid event in 2021, the conference is moving back to its traditional home at the Silverton School gymnasium.

4SAW 2022 coincides with the 60th Anniversary of Silverton Avalanche School (SAS). Founded in 1962, SAS is the oldest continuously operating avalanche and snow safety training program in the United States. 4SAW attendees will join faculty and staff, former instructors, industry colleagues, alumni, current students and Silverton residents in celebrating six decades of educational excellence in San Juan County. A post 4SAW birthday party, sponsored by local breweries, will be held immediately following the close of Saturday’s program.
